Bulungi - a trip to Uganda

We all want to know where it comes from. And we want to be sure that our products meet high standards of quality. After all, everybody should be treated fairly in the value chain. We are pleased to tell you we do this.

Through the direct import of our Bulungi highland coffee from Uganda we support coffee farmers in the region around the Equator. This enables the cooperatives to invest more money in projects that improve the living conditions of the local people in the long term. One of the most important issues for the people and especially the children in the suburbs is the supply of clean drinking water. We directly supported such a project in 2019 by installing rainwater tanks in the primary schools of the KWETERANA cooperative. The tanks store the water needed to improve hygiene and secure drinking water resources for the children.

Enjoying something special

The coffee bushes for Bulungi grow on the equator at an altitude of 1,400 to 1,900 metres. We therefore refer to them as ‘highland beans’, which ripen slowly under the shade of the leaves of the matoke plantains (‘shadow grown’). Only the beautiful red, ripe coffee cherries are carefully picked by hand from the bushes. This ‘single picking’ ensures the high quality of our highland coffee right from the harvest.

After processing, the green coffee is loaded into sacks and shipped to Europe, where it is then sent on to our traditional roasting facility in Vienna for further processing. There, the green coffee beans are roasted slowly and gently at low temperatures in a long-term process. Every sip transports connoisseurs to the small coffee fields of Uganda.

Interesting information

Uganda is located in East Africa and is 5,448 km from Vienna as the crow flies. It covers an area of 241,550 km² and has a population of around 36 million. The capital of Uganda is Kampala, 35 km north of the Equator. The national language is Swahili. In Swahili, “Bulungi” means: “It is very good” – that is what we think too.
