Coffee grounds become growth: café+co and BeResilient launch sustainable plant fertiliser

What used to end up in the rubbish bin is now on the shelf: together with the Viennese start-up BeResilient, we have launched an innovative recycling project that turns coffee grounds into a valuable resource. BeanSaver® all-season fertiliser, made from coffee grounds, is now available in all Starkl garden centres – marking a milestone in sustainable recycling management.

From waste to recycled material

It all started a year ago when BeResilient and café+co launched a partnership to use coffee grounds as a raw material. What hundreds of companies throw away every day from their coffee machines used to be disposed of. Today, it is turned into high-quality plant fertiliser – completely natural, without any chemical additives.

‘We have managed to close a real cycle: coffee grounds collected from café+co customers last year are now available in stores as a new product. Together with BeResilient, we have developed a high-quality plant fertiliser from a waste product,’ says Fritz Kaltenegger, CEO of café+co International. Vera Amtmann, Managing Director of BeResilient, is also proud of this sustainable success: ’Sustainability begins when we rethink what we consider to be waste. With our plant fertiliser made from coffee grounds, we are giving valuable resources a second chance.’

How does coffee grounds collection work?

The collection is carried out specifically in companies where large quantities of coffee grounds are produced but there are no sensible recycling options. The advantages are obvious:

  • Waste reduction
  • Cost savings
  • Zero-waste approach

BeResilient has developed its own collection system in collaboration with the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences in Vienna: stackable, space-saving boxes that enable ideal storage and drying of the coffee grounds, thus preserving their quality. The collection boxes simplify logistics, enable digitalisation and automation, and ensure that the raw material can be processed in the best possible condition.

Sustainability that grows

BeanSaver® fertiliser contains coffee grounds, sheep's wool and wood. This combination provides plants with nutrients, promotes soil life and helps reduce CO₂ emissions. And the best thing is: this is just the beginning. The goal? To develop more products from coffee grounds – and thus consistently advance the recycling cycle.
