SUSTAINABLE EVERY TIME.

Sustainability you can taste. Consciously better. In every cup.

Always offering you the #PERFECTBREAK with a clear conscience, café+co’s more than 2000 employees are there for you, enthusiastically, sustainably, and for the long term. After all,

sustainability is an essential, core concept for café+co’s corporate philosophy, in terms of quality assurance from growing through to recycling, as well as in terms of long-term business relationships with our customers and producers.

We focus on two criteria in particular:

  • Coffee sustainability must be compatible with delivering the best taste;
  • Sustainability must not lead to any sacrifices in terms of quality or service.

It’s very important to us to have traceability in our production, to be able to show this information to our discerning customers, and also to be able offer the best quality. We regularly visit the cooperatives involved in growing our coffee beans in order to perform quality checks. That means we’ve gotten to know the farmers who grow the coffee berries used to make our coffee.

Fritz Kaltenegger’s visit to the cooperative

Another important point for us is our dense network of café+co locations across Europe, from Lake Constance over to Moscow, which ensures deliveries are always as fast as possible, delivery routes are short, and therefore CO2 emissions are as low as possible for every cup of coffee.

We take our promise of the #PERFECTBREAK seriously: from coffee berry, to roasted bean, right down to every cup.

CAFÉ + CO FOLLOWS ITS RESPONSIBILITY FOR ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION.

With ‘CupCare’, we offer our customers a cup return programme, whereby cups are collected and disposed of properly.

Our machines also feature sensors to prevent a disposable cup being dispensed if the user has their own mug or cup instead, thereby allowing for a more environmentally friendly operation.

Disposable paper cups are made from paper and approx. 4% polyethylene, which is needed to form the inside coating. Our suppliers are currently working to develop paper cups that are 100% compostable through industrial composting, and these will be available in the very near future. The plastic cups used by café+co are made with 20% ‘GreenPlast’. By using natural raw materials (such as plaster), these innovative cups enable a full taste experience with maximum conservation of resources. The remaining composition uses raw materials of fossil origin to ensure the cup has the required stability and elasticity.

More than 20% of the café+co cups currently in use are the paper variety. That equates to 1 in 5 of our cups being a paper cup.

This proportion is steadily increasing. Back in 2010, the figure stood at only 3.6%.

Compared with the current proportion of paper cups that we now use, we’ve managed to save 230 tons of plastic annually.

WASTE PREVENTION

The increased use of paper cups instead of older plastic versions enables an annual saving of 160 tons of plastic (as of June 2013) as sales volumes continue to increase. This can be increased fourfold within just three years. By incorporating natural raw materials in all our café+co branded cups, we’ll be able to reduce our plastic waste by 520 tons per year in the future.

café+co has been repeatedly awarded the ÖKOPROFIT seal of approval by the city of Vienna, which recognises companies’ efforts to reduce operating costs through efficient use of resources and raw materials, optimise production processes, and avoid waste.

A CUP FULL OF ENERGY. USING LESS ELECTRICITY.

Our aim (amongst other things) is to incorporate as many functions as possible within a single power connection, so that we can optimise the number of devices connected to a company’s power supply (e.g. one café+co machine incorporating an espresso machine, a classic vending range, a larger pot function for meetings, and a hot water tap for teas). The technology used for the café+co Bar has already been recognised as being particularly efficient in saving energy.

Energimyndighetens Testlab in Sweden awarded the technology used in the café+co Bar with top marks in terms of economical savings and environmental protection in a test comprising six table-top coffee machines that freshly brew beverages. The café+co Bar uses up to 50% less electricity than other machines in the test.
